We have in our beautiful front garden many, many small purple flags which recognize each referral to Sonoma County’s Elder Abuse hotline during the past year. We hope that soon enough, there will be a lot fewer flags because of a reduction in abuse.
The Sebastopol Area Senior Center and two marvelous volunteers are doing our part to reduce Elder Abuse. We are welcoming Jill Ravitch, newly retired District Attorney for the County of Sonoma, and Ron Nelson, Sebastopol Police Department Chief for a presentation on Wednesday, June 21 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. They will discuss preventing elder abuse, both financial and emotional. These are the two most prevalent forms of elder abuse in Sonoma County. They will discuss how to discern telephone and internet scams, and scams and stealing from people known to you. This is a sensitive topic and an incredibly important one. Learn from the experts – Jill started the Family Justice Center with a focus on supporting people who have experience abuse. She and Ron have been involved with this issue for decades and continue to be strong advocates of these often quiet and embarrassing crimes against seniors. Please join us for this talk and discussion and become better prepared to protect yourself and your loved ones.
This important workshop is free to both members and non-members and will be held at the Senior Center and available via Zoom so that all community members, especially those that have a hard time getting to the Senior Center, can access this important information. Please call us at 707-829-2440 to register (note we are closed Monday) so leave a message Monday and call and talk to us the rest of the week.
