HICAP is a program of Senior Advocacy Services
HICAP is funded by a grant from the California Department of Aging through a contract with the Area Agencies on Aging serving Lake, Mendocino, Marin, Napa, Solano and Sonoma Counties. Counseling of seniors and persons with disabilities takes place at a variety of sites throughout the six-county area. Appointments are scheduled in advance on regularly established days at specific sites.
To provide one-on-one counseling for seniors and persons with disabilities who are on Medicare, a volunteer must be registered with the California Department of Aging HICAP office. Registered volunteer counselors are expected to commit a minimum of four to eight hours per month, usually two afternoons or mornings per month. Registration follows twenty-four hours of classroom training, and a minimum of ten hours of supervised internship. We also require a minimum of twelve hours of continuing education per year after initial registration. HICAP volunteer counselors like the challenge and are committed to the demands for excellence in volunteer service required by the program.
Counselors do not necessarily counsel at a site in their county, but we try to accommodate this as best we can. Our job is to meet the needs of our clients throughout the six counties.
The work the volunteer counselors do is important to the health and well-being of the clients we serve. Our volunteers enjoy HICAP and they like knowing their service is valued by the client and that they are making a difference. HICAP volunteers enjoy staying up-to-date on the latest happenings and changes in health care coverage as it applies to Medicare beneficiaries.
We will be scheduling our next Counselor Certification training within the upcoming months.
