Become a Volunteer

Volunteerism and community support are at the heart of our agency. If you would like to make a difference in the lives of seniors you can help in many ways.

Volunteers are used extensively in our programs, with 80+ volunteers giving more than 10,000 hours annually. This enables us to provide a great deal of service across a wide geographic area containing almost 226,000 seniors while retaining a relatively small staff.

Senior Advocacy Services volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities.

Volunteer opportunities include:

• Board of Directors - oversee the functions of the agency and represent our agency in the community.
• Long Term Care Ombudsman - are trained and certified volunteers who visit nursing homes and residential care facilities throughout the county to help residents who may have problems.
• HICAP Counselors - are trained and state registered volunteers who provide information and counseling to individuals on issues regarding Medicare, Medicare covered services and long-term care insurance.
• Office Assistants - provide a variety of functions such as answering phones, clerical duties and data input.
• Special Projects Volunteers - are always needed to help with with special fundraising events.

What training is needed?

Certification training is required for Ombudsman and HICAP Counselors. The length of the training is 35-40 hours of classroom instruction followed by an internship period. Both types of volunteers require 12 hours of continuing education yearly which is provided by the agency.

Training or orientation is provided for the other volunteers positions as appropriate.
